Day 1: Travel to Yerevan

Experience a smooth journey as you fly from the UK to Yerevan via Paris. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to local accommodations, such as the Metropol Hotel, where you will spend four nights. Then, rest and rejuvenate for the exciting adventure ahead.

Day 2: Yerevan

Today, discover Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. Visit the Matenadaran, or the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, which has been in operation since 1957 and houses over 23,000 manuscripts, including the 9th-century Lazarian Gospel and the 10th-century Echmiadzin Gospel.

Then, explore the Erebuni Fortress, built in 782 BC by King Argishti, with a local guide and learn about the history of the Urartu Kingdom. Next, visit the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex, a museum dedicated to the 1915 – 1917 genocide of the Armenian people conducted in the Ottoman Empire, and pay your respects. Finally, explore the National Art Gallery, home to exquisite frescoes from the medieval period and stunning European and local art.

Day 3: Etchmiadzin

Take a trip west of Yerevan and explore Etchmiadzin, the religious capital of Armenia. Here you can find several UNESCO Sites, including the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, the oldest cathedral built by a nation-state. This architectural masterpiece has stood for over 1,700 years and hosts the Holy Lance used to pierce Jesus Christ’s side when he was crucified.

You can also explore the Saint Hripsime Church, an outstanding example of Armenian architecture. Don’t miss the ruins of the 7th-century Zvartnots Cathedral, one of the most impressive churches of medieval Armenia. This majestic structure was destroyed by an earthquake in the 10th century, though its ruins are still awe-inspiring and provide a glimpse into Armenia’s rich cultural heritage.

Day 4: Garni | Geghard

Today, head in the opposite direction to Garni temple, a fascinating example of Hellenistic architecture. It is the only pagan temple that survived the Christianization of Armenia in the 4th century, making it an important historical site.

After visiting Garni, proceed to Geghard, a medieval monastery partially embedded in the nearby mountain. This monastery houses several churches and tombs and features intricate stone carvings and beautiful architecture, making it one of the most impressive religious structures in the region.

Day 5: Lake Sevan Monasteries | Tbilisi

On day five, make your way to Georgia and visit the stunning Lake Sevan, the largest lake in the Caucasus. This beautiful lake is surrounded by breathtaking mountain ranges and is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

After exploring Lake Sevan, visit Sanahin and Haghpat, two monasteries that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These 10th-century monasteries are remarkable examples of medieval Armenian architecture and are among the country’s most important cultural and religious sites. In the evening, arrive in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, where you will stay for two nights in local accommodations, such as the Museum Hotel.

Day 6: Tbilisi

Today, explore the charming capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. Start your day by taking a cable car to visit the Narikala Fortress, built in the 4th century. Positioned on a hill, the fortress offers incredible views of the city.

After, visit the Metekhi Church, built in the 5th century and turned into an infamous Soviet-era prison. This church is a beautiful example of medieval Georgian architecture with its cross-cupola. Then, explore the State Museum, where you will discover an impressive collection of regional artifacts, including metalwork and icons, from the Bronze Age to modern times.

The highlight of your day will be a private guided visit to the Georgia Museum of Art, where you will meet an experienced curator and learn about the country’s art and culture.

Day 7: Mtskheta | Gori | Kutaisi

Today, set off early to explore Mtskheta, a UNESCO Site and one of Georgia’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. As the former capital of the early Georgian Kingdom of Iberia, Mtskheta is home to many significant religious sites, including the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of the most venerated churches in Georgia.

Visit the nearby 6th-century Jvari church, perched on a hill overlooking the confluence of two rivers. Next, go to Gori, Joseph Stalin’s birthplace, where you’ll visit the Stalin Museum. The museum features a collection of artifacts and exhibits documenting the life of one of the most controversial figures of the 20th century.

Afterward, continue to Kutaisi, a charming city in western Georgia, where you’ll spend one night in local accommodations, such as the New Port Hotel.

Day 8: Bagrati | Gelati | Ubisa | Tbilisi

Today, explore Bagrati Cathedral, one of Georgia’s most important religious and cultural monuments, built in the 11th century by King Bagrat III. Located on a hill, the cathedral offers spectacular views of Kutaisi.

Then, head to the monastery complex of Gelati, founded by King David the Builder in the 12th century. The complex includes a cathedral, several churches, and a monastery and is known for its stunning mosaics and frescoes. Afterward, visit Ubisa, a small village famous for its cave monastery. Here, you can explore the ancient caves and see the impressive murals that cover the walls. Spend the night in Tbilisi in local accommodations like the Museum Hotel.

Day 9: Gremi | Ikalto | Bodbe | Signagi

Today, head east through Kakheti to Gremi to explore the Church of the Archangels and the royal citadel, the only monuments left standing after Shah Abbas destroyed the town in 1615. Next, visit the Ikalto Academy, a former center of Georgian culture and education, where you can see the ruins of the ancient academy and the Church of the Holy Spirit.

Then, visit the Bodbe monastery, a major pilgrimage site in Georgia, where the 4th-century apostle to Georgia, St. Nino, is buried. Finally, head to the charming town of Signagi, known for its beautiful architecture, narrow streets, and incredible views of the Alazani Valley. Spend the night in local accommodations, such as the Kabadoni Hotel.

Day 10: Signagi | Tsinandali | Telavi | Alaverdi | Tbilisi

Start your day by exploring Signagi’s cobblestone streets, charming shops, and local cafes. Next, head to Tsinandali, a 15th-century village that hosts the estate and vineyard of the Chavchavadze, a local noble family. Visit the beautiful gardens, museum, and wine cellar.

After, visit Telavi, the Kakheti region’s capital, where you can find some of the most outstanding vineyards in Georgia. Sample some of the finest Georgian wines and learn about the region’s winemaking traditions.

Finally, visit Alaverdi, a Georgian monastery built in the 6th century that still functions today. Discover the monastery’s greatest masterpiece, a cathedral built in the 11th century, one of the country’s tallest churches. Then, head back to Tbilisi and spend the night in local accommodations, like the Museum Hotel.
